Meet Theo

My newest foster puppy is a Heeler mix named Theo. He's about 8 weeks old, and came to the rescue with his whole litter, covered in ticks. They're all doing much better now, and he has been a blast to have around this week!

Theo is one of the most inquisitive puppies I've fostered. He watches the TV, looks straight at you when you talk to him (with the most serious face - so cute :)), and loves to explore anything and everything. True to the Heeler breed, he already goes after everyone's ankles. He's also got an independent nature - loves to lay his head on your feet when he sleeps, but is not very interested in being held in one spot.

It's been so cute to see how Gabe and Theo have gotten along this week - maybe having just one puppy around is less overwhelming to Gabe. I'm hoping someone with some dog experience adopts Theo tomorrow, because he is cute, he is sweet, but he is also full of it!

Meet Miranda, Charlotte, & Carrie.

I have been terrible at posting lately, and a small reason why is because I have not one, not two, but THREE foster puppies this week! It's a little bit of an experiment, and not something I will likely do very often, but it's been a joy to have these three girls stay with us for a few days. They are a special bunch of puppies - every one of them is very affectionate, playful, and adventurous. It's hard to pick a favorite! I know their small, squatty bodies, soft coats, and kisses will win everyone's hearts over when they are up for adoption tomorrow. They appear to be some kind of Cocker Spaniel/King Charles Spaniel/Retriever/Corgi/other-short-legged-breed type of mix.

If I was at a better point in life to add a second dog, I would possibly consider one of these girls. They're some of my favorites that I've had! (And, after having had three all at once, one would probably feel like a piece of cake).

Meet Ruffles and Totsy

It's a foster week again! After many weeks of being unable to take in foster puppies, I got to pick up two precious little ones this morning. They appear to be some kind of German Shepherd/Collie/Chow mixes, but have reminded people of bears, foxes, groundhogs, and guinea pigs too. Needless to say, they are very unique looking, cute puppies! I have been melted to the core by these guys, wishing they could stay for longer than one night! If anyone would like to adopt one and then conveniently give him/her to me, that would be ok :)

So cute you could eat them, right? I don't think these two will have any trouble charming the masses tomorrow. As always, hoping that only good and responsible people will be the ones to take them home.

Meet Bam Bam

Bam Bam is my latest foster puppy. She is about 11 weeks old and appears to be a Lab mix, possibly with Boxer. She's been great to have around! While she does have a set of lungs that she utilizes to the max whenever I have to leave her in her crate, she has slept very well through the night and is one of the most easy-going puppies I've hosted. Gabe likes to play with her and she's reciprocated that despite their size difference! It is my hope that she will go to a home that will help her build confidence. She has probably not been exposed to many life experiences, so cars, strangers, and even geese have frightened her a little. Still, she quickly warms up once she feels comfortable. She is up for adoption this Saturday along with her sister and many other puppies!

I am interrupting our breed countdown to announce that I have new foster puppies this week! Although they look a lot like previous puppies Marvin and Wiley, they are from a separate litter that was found in an abandoned house. Aside from needing time to recover from some health issues that came from their neglect, these girls are full of happy spirits and love to play. They will be up for adoption this Saturday along with a few other littermates.

Meet Marvin & Wiley

Recently, I made connections with a rescue called 'A Puppy's Voice' based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Although it is relatively common knowledge these days that adult dog over-population is a major issue our country deals with every year, it might surprise some of you to know that there are shelters where even young puppies face euthanasia on a daily basis. These facilities are poorly funded and yet filled to the brim - literally a lethal combination. So, the volunteers that run rescues like A Puppy's Voice drive to New Mexico every single week to redeem the lives of some of these puppies. They load up as many puppies as they have foster homes for; that is, people who are willing to open up their homes for a few days at a time and host a puppy until they are adopted. The volunteers also hold adoption events every Saturday at a local PetSmart, and they truly have had a wonderful success rate at placing these little guys and giving them a second chance at a happy life.

Upon learning about A Puppy's Voice, I immediately felt compelled to help out with this cause. Fostering is done on a weekly basis, typically for only two or three days at a time. Furthermore, it's a great way for me to get my 'puppy fix' now and then. It gives Gabe a chance to have some other dog interaction while still allowing him to feel like he's number one in my life (not that he's spoiled or anything...). And, he himself came from a situation very much like the ones these puppies are coming from each week, so it's neat to be able to contribute to saving amazing dogs like him. I love being able to give back to the community in this way and hopefully blessing someone else with a best friend and family member.

So, without further ado, meet Marvin and Wiley - two red heeler mix puppies that were plucked from an unfortunate circumstance and now are up for adoption tomorrow!
